Staff Learning day;
It seemed a very good process of booking your staff learning this year. The only down side was only being told what you were doing the Friday evening before. The courses I booked were:
New tutorial framework; new e-learning tools; equality and diversity online activity and new blackboard session.
The new tutorial framework:
This training was not as informative as I hoped it would be. It contained stuff that I mostly knew and could in my view easily have been completed on line as some sort of activity as the E & D course was. It was more interesting toward the end of the session when we had the ability to discuss what good practice we already do and share ideas to help deliver som generic themes. These generic themes were not on the PP HO? so now I have come away from the session I can't remember what they are!!!
So I'm going to have to have a go at remembering them.
ECM; H & S; child protection; online safety; equality & diversity; ....I believe there were two more but I can't remember what they were now!!!
It would appear that all students do not have tutorials in one form or another and the whole focus of the short presentation was a consistent approach to tutorials not the 'New Tutorial Framework' as advertised, this was omewhat misleading and when you were making choices on what you needed most this was not very helpful as I could have missed another CPD session that was more appropriate to me. 30 mins
New e-learning tools:
This I go into detail on my MALT learning journey blog as it was more appropriate. It was as usual though a very good session with lots of interesting stuff to help make your lessons better, great sessions. 1 hr
Equality & Diversity:
This was an online session and I really enjoyed it. I didn't realise that there was lots of stuff I didn't know. It was quite technical throughout but very relevant to all aspects of teaching

Microdermabrasion Training
Micro-Dermabrasion training Monday 5th July
The training was very good and explained very thoroughly by the trainer. The machine uses diamond heads and not crystals and is therefore considered safer. The machine looked complicated to begin with but after going through the routines it seemed quite simple.
The machine also had two other facilities on it. A tool that heated the skin but also cooled it down and also ultra sound. I was concerned after the ultra sound briefing and thought that it would probably not be used by students as it could cause damage. Until we have the full training when the college have bought the machines we will not have a training manual ourselves.
The machines and applicators were very easy to use and the models skin really looked brighter after the treatment.

EVE TAYLOR TRAINING
Had some great training today from Eve Taylor skin care range. Eve trained me in Aroma therapy over 20 years ago. I was inspired then and was even more inspired yesterday.
The aromatherpy and the concept of chinese face mapping or 'reading the lines' was incredibly interesting. The talk through the products in the morning was a bit long but probably quite necessary. The products are all based around aromatherapy oils. The products seem interchangeable and very versatile which makes them great for L3 beauty therapy.
The desincrusatation product whipped up to a firm egg white consistency which would be really good to keep on the skin and work with and comfortable for the client.
The serums look very easy to use with iontophoresis and micro-current except the time line response which has very active ingredients and would make the treatment uncomfortable for the client. It will be good to get into the salon now to have a go.
Eve Taylor has made a fabulous contribution to the industry and it was really nice to see the concept of Eve Taylor (and ethos) maintained in her products.
From a salon point of view the products are priced reasonably and affordable. The down side for me was the packaging. The stickers on the outside of the bottles look dirty and worn after they had been passed around the group. This would only get worse after they were used time after time, so the packaging needs to be improved really. Also I don't thing as a training establishment we will be able to make much use of the body blends; predominantly designed for pressure point massage. The massage oils are a much better choice for us for swedish massage that the students will do.

Gill Morris talks
Today we had a staff talk by Gill morris about employer engagement
" Beauty training courses >> GMT Beauty : About Us : GILL
Gill Morris - Director
I am passionate about this industry, it’s exciting, constantly evolving and has endless opportunities for mature minded people. From 1998 - 2008 I had my own management consultancy which included business skills training some of which we have included in our Business courses. These courses help to ensure graduates are more employable and those already in this industry continue to develop.
Before having my own marketing and business consultancy I was a general beauty therapist, then owned two salons, sold them and worked for the supply side of the industry in research and development, new product development and general marketing, I travelled extensively internationally and spoke in conventions in such diverse places as America and Japan. I am also an author of text books, distance learning workbooks, industry articles as a well as being a judge of industry awards, member of college advisory committees, an international and national speaker plus a founding director of Habia the government recognised body which sets the National Occupational Standards for hair and beauty. Currently I am also one of the Employer Champions for the new ‘World of Work’ school Diplomas.
My passion, involvement and knowledge within the field of continuing professional development is well documented and I devote 100% of my energies to meet the training and C.P.D. needs of those in this great industry and their businesses.
Thanks
Gill"

I found the talk very interesting with a PP that gave clear indicators on how to engage further with existing employer links and new employers.
The activity was good to get everyone out of their comfort zone and did make us think about how we could engage.
It is particularly important to think much more about employer engagement if beauty therapy is able to move forward with apprenticeships as the government want them to. It is not possible perhaps to integrate training into all treatments in the beauty salon i.e. would be difficult with facials etc. but nails is an area where it is already being done succesfully.
